The design of this private residence began with an investigation of possible synthetic landscapes for its rural, densely wooded site. Responding to the clients’ desire for an octagonal house and their interest in contemporary art, the form of the house takes as a metaphor the cross section of a tree trunk. Since the growth of a plant is directly related to the available light, the house was "germinated" in a time-based computer environment that mimicked the solar conditions of the site. The resultant form of the pith, cambium and bark layers organized the planning of the house.
